I visited St Katherine's CE Primary School in Canvey Island, Essex SS8 9QA, on Tuesday 27 September 2011. After presenting a Kernowland in Erthwurld slideshow assembly for the whole school, I led a
Story House Workshop for the Year 3 class which, at the school's request, had a focus on
fairy tales.
The class were looking at fairy tales as part of that term's topic, 'Wishful Thinking'. This unit of work involved the children looking at stories from different countries and writing their own fairy tales - either modernising them or adding a surprise twist at the end.
Year 3 class teacher, Josie Smith, later sent me some of the artwork and letters that the children had done after the visit. One piece of artwork which I liked for a number of reasons was a picture drawn by pupil, Anthony Brunt.
In my Kernowland story, the pirate ship carrying Tizzie is attacked by a giant orange octoplus with 88 legs and a huge beak. I'm not sure if Anthony's green sea monster picture is inspired by that but it's certainly very graphic and portrays the
action very well.
Anthony, you and all your friends, such as Kalan and Jolie, seem to be in great danger from the Kraken. I like the way you've drawn a speech bubble showing the monster's roar. And poor little Lucy is being eaten by the hungry beast! Is she your sister?
