Author's Magical Book - Cornish Guardian

Author Jack Trelawny shows his new book to Tretherras pupils
Author's Magical Book
Students at a Newquay School were plunged into a magical adventure when local author Jack Trelawny visited to talk about his latest work.

Newquay Tretherras was the setting when Mr Trelawny, author of the book Kernowland - The Crystal Pool, entertained youngsters with a talk and slide show explaining the adventures that the two children find themselves in when they are transported to the magical world of Kernowland.

The students were told about some of the adventures and the interesting characters they meet along the way.

Lots of laughter could be heard from the school library as the students looked at some of the fictional beasts. They were told that it in fact the real world that can be researched and then used for fictional stories.

Librarians Alwany Martin and Tracy Clatworth said students who were unable to see the author have already been to the library to reserve a copy of the book.

Ideas for kids - Collect pictures

Jack Trelawny's Story House - Ideas for kids - Collect pictures
When I first started visiting schools, a big question the children asked was, 'how do we get lots of ideas for stories?' Collecting pictures is one way that I have found works to make sure I have lots of ideas come in to my head when I'm writing. Pictures are everywhere, and, if you collect them all the time, you'll have a better chance of lots of ideas coming into your head when you're writing. I've got all sorts of pictures. I keep them in the 'Gallery' of my Story House.
In the Gallery I imagine there are different 'rooms', with names above the doors, such as People, Places, Things, and Events.
People
Places
Things (also called 'Objects')
Events
And, in each room, there are filing cabinets... so the People room has a cabinet for Children and a cabinet for Adults. Then there are cabinets for Heroes and Villains, and one for Pirates, and one for Warriors.
Of course, each cabinet has lots of drawers to contain all the pictures. Some pictures belong in more than one room or cabinet. That's fine, it's not a problem to store each picture in two, or three, or even more rooms.

Organising my pictures like this means I can store them in some sort of order and look them up quickly when I need ideas. If you can't store all the pictures, you could search for 'Images' on the computer using a search engine like Google. The main thing is to always be looking at pictures for story ideas.

Newquay Tretherras School TR7 3BH - First visit

First school visit - Newquay Tretheras School
The first book in the Kernowland in Erthwurld Series, The Crystal Pool, was published in late September 2005.

The first talk and slideshow presentation was arranged for Year 7 at Newquay Tretherras School. As well as preparing the slideshow, I had to learn two chapters of the book so that I could tell the story without looking at the pages.

Every pupil received a souvenir Kernowland postcard.

Jack Trelawny's Story House - Ideas for Kids

Jack Trelawny's Story House - Ideas for Kids
The 'house' starts simply for beginners, explaining character, setting, and plot using a simple question and answer format: who, when, where, what.
It then builds into a more advanced system to give learners a framework for writing stories, whilst also helping them to understand the way existing stories have been written.
I use elements of the Story House when giving my whole-school presentations.
I go into more depth with classes and smaller groups in Story House Workshops.
