On 11 October 2011, I visited Thorpe Hall Lower School in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and gave a slideshow presentation and talk followed by a 'Meet the Author' booksigning event.

Afterwards, the children kindly sent me some letters and artwork based on my books and the presentation. This helps other schools to know what happens so they can decide if they would like a FREE Jack Trelawny author visit to their school. Below is a letter from Callum Blackaby.

I like the mutant and crab pictures Luke has drawn based on the Kernowland in Erthwurld stories. Colouring  them in with bright crayons has really made them come to life!

Biggleswade Today - Report of visit to Burgoyne Middle School

Pupils and Jack visit Kernowland
Jack Trelawny with pupils from Burgoyne Middle School
The following article appeared on the Biggleswade Today website today...
YOUNGSTERS dived into a crystal pool of words with an author visit.
Jack Trelawny, who writes children’s adventure fantasy novels, worked with the pupils at Burgoyne Middle School in Potton on Wednesday, October 5.
His books follow Tizzie and Louis as they step into a cave in Cornwall and find themselves in Kernowland, a tiny kingdom in Erthwurld.
He has written six in the series, starting with The Crystal Pool and ending with Colosseum of Dread.
Jack, who visited the school for free, spoke to the children in Years 5 and 6 about his writing.
Sarah Wells, the cover supervisor who organised the visit, said: “It was a wonderfully inspirational talk. He spoke about how he uses his imagination to create stories.”

Burgoyne Middle School SG19 2PG

Jack Trelawny visits Burgoyne Middle School
The children in Years 5 and 6 at Burgoyne Middle school enjoyed an inspirational talk from the author Jack Trelawny today.
The author of the Kernowland and Erthwurld series spoke about how he uses his imagination to create stories.
He showed with a series of pictures how he used certain questions – who, what, where, when and why – to develop ideas for story writing.
The children had many a giggle at the wonderful animals Mr Trelawny had created from the zebroceros to the cross between the giraffe, seal, deer and elephant that even Mr Trelawny had been unable to name!!!
Children were heard afterwards:
“I loved the way he made up animals- the cross breeds- they were so funny”
Other children thought “the cute animals were the best” while other children were surprised: “It was amazing how he read the first chapter of his book without even looking at it!”
After a book-signing session the children returned enthused to their lessons and Mr Trelawny enjoyed a well earned coffee before travelling to his next school in Essex.

We would like to thank Mr Trelawny for the wonderful experience he gave the children and staff who also found the talk interesting! We would certainly recommend this to any school especially as  Mr Trelawny offers these visits for free at present – visit his website www.jacktrelawny.co.uk or ring Jane Bennett at Campion books, tel 01992 714369.

To Campion Books,

Please pass on again our gratitude to Jack. The staff and children are all enthused having seen him in action. What an inspirational speaker!!!! the children loved him and the staff were enthralled as well. We are handing out the extra order forms this afternoon as many children expressed the wish that they had ordered...

Kids art and letters - St Katherine's Primary School SS8 9QA

Jack Trelawny's Story House - Kids art and letters - St Katherine's Primary School - Picture drawn by Anthony Brunt

I visited St Katherine's CE Primary School in Canvey Island, Essex SS8 9QA, on Tuesday 27 September 2011. After presenting a Kernowland in Erthwurld slideshow assembly for the whole school, I led a Story House Workshop for the Year 3 class which, at the school's request, had a focus on fairy tales.

The class were looking at fairy tales as part of that term's topic, 'Wishful Thinking'. This unit of work involved the children looking at stories from different countries and writing their own fairy tales - either modernising them or adding a surprise twist at the end.

Year 3 class teacher, Josie Smith, later sent me some of the artwork and letters that the children had done after the visit. One piece of artwork which I liked for a number of reasons was a picture drawn by pupil, Anthony Brunt.

In my Kernowland story, the pirate ship carrying Tizzie is attacked by a giant orange octoplus with 88 legs and a huge beak. I'm not sure if Anthony's green sea monster picture is inspired by that but it's certainly very graphic and portrays the action very well.

Anthony, you and all your friends, such as Kalan and Jolie, seem to be in great danger from the Kraken. I like the way you've drawn a speech bubble showing the monster's roar. And poor little Lucy is being eaten by the hungry beast! Is she your sister?
