Deansbrook Junior School

Visit to Deansbrook Junior School, Mill Hill NW7 3ED
I visited Deansbrook Junior School in Mill Hill, North London, and gave a slideshow presentation and talk followed by a 'Meet the Author' booksigning event.

The following is some information about the school from their website...

Deansbrook Junior School is a mixed community school for children between the ages of 7 and 11. It is maintained by the London Borough of Barnet.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION
The school has three classes in each year group, Year 3 to Year 6.

Each year group team has a year leader, class teachers and teaching support staff. The classes are managed by the class teacher with support from the teaching support staff.  Occasionally within a class there may be a child who has been assessed as having particular learning or physical needs, they will have a teaching support assistant allocated to them.

ASSEMBLY/COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

Four days a week there is an act of collective contemplative worship. This is of a broadly Christian nature, but also includes the other major world faiths.
During assemblies the whole school joins together each day to sing and enjoy music, to share news, to celebrate children's achievements and to consider moral issues. Visitors of many faiths, school staff and pupils lead our assemblies, and families are welcome to join us.  Once a year each class presents a class assembly. This gives each class a chance to show the school what they have been learning.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from collective worship but are requested to discuss their request with the headteacher before doing so.

One day a week circle groups are held.  These groups allow children from across year groups to gather and discuss current affairs that affect them personally and those of their community. The group empowers the children to learn to become active citizens.  Those members of society who not only think about adding value to their community but who take action to make a difference.  The groups are steered by the children in Year 6 and are overseen by the teaching staff.
