Foulds School EN5 4NR

Visit to Foulds School - Barnet, Hertfordshire
I visited Foulds School in Barnet, Hertfordshire, on 28 February 2006 and gave a Kernowland in Erthwurld slideshow presentation and talk followed by a 'Meet the Author' booksigning event.
The following is some information about the school from their website...

"Foulds is a good school and justifiably enjoys a good level of parental confidence. Typical comments include, 'a lovely community school', 'children love it', 'so pleased with my child's progress'. Pupils achieve well because of good teaching and a curriculum enriched with many interesting opportunities. They learn in an ethos in which all pupils are valued, no matter what their backgrounds or abilities."
OFSTED, November 2007.
Foulds School is situated in High Barnet. We are a one and a half form entry school. There has been a school on this site since 1910, when the school was originally called Byng Road School. The school is sited in the heart of residential housing, placed close to a thriving community of shops, businesses and buildings including local churches and the library. Most of the children live within walking distance of the school. We have a School Travel Plan and, in line with that, encourage all members of the school community and visitors to travel to and from the school in a sustainable way e.g. walking, by bus, or cycling.
At Foulds we follow a Creative Curriculum.  We integrate the separate curriculum areas into a topic, which may last for a fortnight, half a term or longer, and which is brought alive by exciting, active learning experiences.
We develop the children's independent learning skills through personalised learning; children let the teachers know what they know already about a topic and what they would like to learn.  Above all, we believe that learning should be fun!

Dame Alice Owen's School - EN6 2DU

Visit to Dame Alice Owen's School - Potters Bar
Dame Alice Owen
I visited Dame Alice Owen's School in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, on 28 February 2006 and gave a Kernowland in Erthwurld slideshow presentation and talk followed by a 'Meet the Author' booksigning event.

The school has a very interesting history, especially the story of how it all began...

Dame Alice Owen was born at Islington in 1547. She was the daughter of a rich landowner named Wilkes. "In the reign of Queen Mary it was an exercise for archers to shoot with their bows and arrows at butts: this part of Islington at that time being all open fields and pasture land. The Lady Owen, then a maiden gentlewoman, was one day walking abroad in the fields attended by her maid-servant, when she observed a woman milking, and had a mind to try the cows' paps, whether she could milk, which she did; at her withdrawing from the cow, an arrow shot through the crown of her hat (then worn very tall), which so startled her that she then declared, if she lived to be a lady, she would erect something on that spot of ground in commemoration of the great mercy shown by the Almighty in that astonishing deliverance. Time passed on until she became a widow, when her servant, who had been present on the occasion of the accident, being still living with her Lady, reminded her Lady of her former words. She answered that she remembered the affair and intended to fulfill her promise." She thereupon purchased the Hermitage Estate (being "land from the Welsh Harp to the Turk's Head,") and erected thereon almshouses in the year 1609, and a free Grammar School in the year 1613. The School was for 30 Scholars, 24 from Islington and 6 from Clerkenwell.

The Village Bookshop - 25 Feburary 2006

Rubbing shoulders with authors
Signing books at The Village Bookshop
I visited to The Village Bookshop in Woodford Green, Essex, to sign copies of Book 1 in the Kernowland in Erthwurld series... The Crystal Pool.

The following article appeared in the local Guardian Newspaper...

Rubbing Shoulders with authors
CHILDREN got the chance to meet author Jack Trelawny when he signed copies of his new children's book. Mr Trelawny spent Saturday at the Village Bookshop in Woodford Green where he launched his first children's book Kernowland: The Crystal Pool. The next book in the series, Kernowland: Darkness day is out in June.

Co-owner of the Village bookshop Alison Lawrence, 42, said: "It was our first signing since taking over the shop five weeks ago. The kids were really excited about the book and all in all it was a success."

The 43-year-old author, who lives in Coopersdale, Epping, is travelling all over the county doing book signings for his first book, and Waterstone will be featuring him as children's author of the month in March.

Mr Trelawny said: "The children seemed to be enjoying themselves, and the books are starting to be recommended to be read in schools."

Signed copies of the book are still available at the shop.
